  • Notes
    • Benjamin George Philpott, Snr., was born on the 27 July 1875 at Forest Street, Forest Lodge, Glebe, NSW.,the fourth surviving child and third son of John May Philpott II and Maria (Bulstrode) Philpott. He became a master plumber.

Alice Barnes was born at Campbell Street, Glebe, NSW., on 28 December 1876, the third living child and second daughter of Harry Barnes and Nancy (Dubber) Barnes. She became a dressmaker and the family moved to 123 Park Avenue, Ashfield.

On 18 August 1900 at the age of 25 years, Benjamin George, married Alice, then aged 23 years, at 123 Park Avenue, Ashfield, under Congregational Church rites. Their marriage witnesses were Alex Logan and Ruby Barnes.

He built a house at 4 Hampden Street, Hurlstone Park, where their seven children were born.

Benjamin worked as a plumber and builder for many years, and was foreman plumber on Wyoming Chambers on the corner of Hunter and Macquarie Streets, Sydney. At one stage he gave up plumbing and went into manufacturing plumbers' goods, importing machines from the U.S.A., for some processes, and tone of pipe from the Scottish Tube Co., which was delivered into the yard at Hurlstone Park, from where he worked, by horse and wagon teams. As other people got into the manufacturing field, he was forced out, and went back to plumbing and building. He built a number of houses in the metropolitan area.

At one stage, Benjamin operated and dance in a hall at the end of Duntroon Street, Hurlstone Park. It is understood that he did this for severl years and that Madeline, his eldest child attended the dances.

Benjamin George Philpott, Snr., died in hospital on 11 September, 1948, aged 73 years.

Alice (Barnes) Philpott died on 29 July 1953, aged 76 years.

They were both cremated at Rookwood Crematorium and the "ashes were scattered to the winds".

This was in a letter sent to me by Pam Philpott, 22 March 1999.
