The following physical description was given at the time of enlistment: Age : 31 years, 7 months Height : 5 feet, 6.5 inches Weight : 140lbs Eyes : Grey Hair : Dark Next of kin: Leo O'Loughlin, Johnson's Hotel, City Road Darlington. Mrs Maggie Perks, 44 Beach Road, Bondi. On joining, Bert was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Reinforcements. He served in the Gallipoli campaign - one of the most disastrous campaigns by the British, but is seen as a defining moment in the Australian nation. His regimental number was 54723 and he was assigned to the Training battalion, but the service did not last long - just a under a year. His time was spent mostly in and out of hospitals where he was treated for Rheumatism. Bert was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War medal & the Victory Medal.
